Installing Website Fails with 0x8004005 Error During Fresh Installation

    Rev: 2.0

    Problem

You are attempting to install the Enterprise / Random Password Manager website for the first time (fresh install) onto your 64bit Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 host system and receive error 0x8004005.

    Cause

Enterprise / Random Password Manager defaults to copying the COM object required for the website to "C:\Windows\System32", which is the default location for DLL type files on a 32bit system.

In 64bit systems, the System32 directory is reserved for 64bit DLLs.

    Solution

Change the COM object file path to a value other than the System32 directory.

In 64bit system, the SysWOW64 (C:\Windows\SysWOW64) directory is the default/preferred location for 32bit DLLs. You can however, copy the file to any other secured folder other than System32.

    More Information

This behavior was accounted for in version 4.80.0 and later of ERPM and RPM. The new installation routine detects the bit-level of the target operating system and will automatically place COM object into the \SysWOW64 directory as required.

    Applies To:
    Random Password Manager (RPM)
    Enterprise Random Password Manager (ERPM)
